For the few volunteer fire fighters in high school, that pager can go off at any time. It takes a lot to learn how to balance a life that involves school, work, friends, the fire department, and so much more. Senior Tim Boardman of Station 2 has been a member for a little over two years. Many members joined for the same reason he did, which is for the experience and the desire to help people. Others believe that being a volunteer fire fighter can provide a great reference and can help get a good jump start in a career in any kind of paramilitary field. Other than experience, having a family member that is a fire fighter is another reason people join. Boardman has an older brother who is on the fire department. It does become difficult for high school students trying to balance the fire academy with just being a regular member. The academy meets three times a week and takes about six months to complete. The only two people at Case who are currently in the academy are Boardman and senior Dennis Lynch. It is difficult, but it will be easier when school is done, says Lynch. Boardman adds that despite it being difficult work, it is very rewarding. They arent the only two who feel this way. Swansea Fire Chief Peter Burke agrees. I feel that having high school students (on the job) is a good thing, he says. It gives them an opportunity to get trained young, and it is beneficial for the department, too. According to Burke, the Swansea fire department is made up of 110 strong, dedicated volunteers. <xsGMMdgxsGMMdxsGMMd-xsGMMdxsGMMdxsGMMdexsGMMd(xKddd8])PC . 8TXT3 . %@@S.P@# % a A (continued to p. 2)dGMMd(xKddd4`T (?M H` %`%`#*@*@1X:LPQ*Tu`Vw@Y*Sx@HXf@>H&`g:H`f@\`hFPh*h]`YiP)i\*iB2*rj@`P"nP&P"n 1*!n *!o A : page 2xGMMd(xKddd % @ %page 3xGMMd(xKdddParody: What we can do about global warming -GMMdGMMd.(xKddd./ X)T)! ! # !3 (; #+ 3 #3 # "C # "+ "# # "3 + # $3 !3 C # # ; #3 ## "+ "# !# ## $3 Ci ; # # # 3 ## %# # + #3 &# + %3 $# C # #+ # "; $+ !3 # + !# !# Ck + "# "# ## 3 "# 3 # ; + !# !# C ; #3 ## 3 + # # # $# + !3 !3 Cs + !# !# # "+ + 3 #; "3 # ## ; "3 %3 ## $+ "+ SX 3 !# # #; 3 # C "; $# # "3 "Cl 3 C Climate change is no longer only a possibility, but is now a reality. In wake of the rising global temperatures, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)* has issued the following guidelines for reducing your blame for the impending crisis: 1. In the summer months, people living in temperate latitudes and lower should turn their air conditioners around to face outdoors. The trillions of BTUs consumed to power these systems are doing no good cooling the indoors; rather, let us try to bring the earths temperature down a few degrees. 2. For those worried that point 1 may leave them feeling two warm, the EPA is researching the feasibility of using ones open refrigerator to lower the temperature of an indoor environment. Preliminary testing has proven inconclusive, but until studies prove otherwise, we recommend trying it. Whats the worst that could happen? 3. In the winter, people living in temperate latitudes and above should consume as much oil and natural gas as possible to heat their homes. The more fossil fuels that are consumed by individual households, the less that are available for power plants and the like to burn, releasing carbon into the air. The resulting loss of electricity will bring families back to more traditional times, and a resurgence of culture before the television will benefit us all. 4. Microwave ovens radiate vast quantities of thermal radiation to the outside air, thus contributing to the global temperature rise. When operating these devices, turn them to a lower setting, or bypass them altogether and instead use your gas burning stove to radiate useless heat into the atmosphere. 5. Every person should immediately purchase a hybrid or full-electric automobile. If the automobile is too expensive, as a probable solution, the EPA suggests going into debt to help the environment. With every car on the road green, not only will the world look more organized, but all of the gas-powered cars will provide endless scrap metal for metal sculpture enthusiasts everywhere. 6. The EPA encourages everyone to invest in underground abodes. If the entire world lived underground, thermal radiation from our bodies and fuel consumption would be kept from escaping into the atmosphere, and it has been scientifically proven that it is 5 degrees cooler for every 2 feet burrowed underground**, thus allowing us to escape the effects of global warming already present. 7. In advent that global warming cannot be curtailed, point 6 provides a pragmatic solution to problems presented by point 7. Point 7 is the correction of human error in the climate by applied physics. The EPA would inform NATO of the irreversibility of natures downfall. NATO would then commence to barrage the planet with thermonuclear warheads. With everyone already underground, fallout can be ignored. The resultant nuclear winter would counterbalance the rise in global temperature, leading to a safe world for all to enjoy. The EPA hopes all consider following these guidelines, for the development of a more drastic point 8 is already underway. The only way climate change can be averted is if we all play a part. * The EPA denies all affiliation with the author of this list and in fact denounces all seven points listed here. The EPA also denies all factuality of point 2. ** This has actually never been proven by anyone. 5 xsGMMdxsGMMdxsGMMd (xKddd 8])PC . 8TXT3 & %W&@# %Review: Indy is well worth the wait&,GMMd&U(xKddd& @@XP P ' by Jake Bissaro Cardinal StaffxGMMd xGMMdxGMMd(xKdddp: pD8 pE0 p@0 p>0 0pE0 p@ p A page 4dGMMd(xKdddThe Cardinal wishes to thank the following people for their year-long help in producing the school newspaper: Superintendent Stephan Flanagan, Assistant Superintendent Christine Stanton, Principal Brian McCann, Assistant Principal Robert Silveira, Academic Dean Karen Ragland, English Department Chair Donna Hawley, computer facilitator Robert Fontaine, and secretary Rosemary Barbo.xGMMd(xKddd p ,,A ,, BB3 + !3 "3 !+ "# ; "3 + C # "3 + !3 # # C + # # + # # 3 # + # # # ; 3 !# # C # # 3 3 # %# + "3 # # # # # C # # # 3 !; # !# # 3 3 # # # ; !# 3 # ## C # !3 "3 # ; 3 C] 3 # !# + # # # ; C C You may have some burning questions about the new Indiana Jones film. Will this movie live up to the originals? Will it be one of those completely stupid sequels that they should not have made? And most importantly, is Harrison Ford, at 65, too old to continue playing action hero? Moviegoers can put those fears to rest. With a solid cast, great direction, and killer special effects, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has the spark of the original trio. The film had been in development since 1989, after the release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the previous movie in the series. It was delayed because director Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford disagreed about the plot. Multiple screenwriters, including Frank Darabont and M. Night Shyamalan, wrote drafts of the movie, but David Keopps was ultimately accepted. The movie grossed $101 million its first weekend, making it the third biggest opening of all time. The movie is set in 1957, 19 years after the Last Crusade left off, during the height of the Cold War. The complex plot involves extra-terrestrials, hidden treasure, and evil Russian spies. At times the plot can seem a bit absurd, but the film has all the classic elements youd expect from an Indiana Jones movie, including narrow escapes, fistfights, and lame, corny jokes. Crystal Skull has a varied cast, including veterans and some new faces. Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), Indys former love, is re-introduced into the saga after they split up in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Shia LaBeouf plays Mutt Williams, a motorcycle riding rebel and Indys new sidekick. But the crowned jewel in this movie is Cate Blanchett as Irina Spalco, an evil Soviet agent. Other notable performances in the film are given by John Hurt and Ray Winstone. And Harrison Ford still has it, as tough, sarcastic, and cool as ever in the title role. Another upside is veteran Steven Spielberg reprising his role as director. The direction is excellent, and the action scenes flow flawlessly, including Joness survival of an atomic bomb. The films downside is its ending, which some may find hard to grasp, but is definitely a worthy sequel to the originals. So if youre a fan of swashbuckling adventure and out-of-this-world plots, you might find this movie thoroughly enjoyable. But in the past year, the town has been flooded with proposals for the Route 6 retail hub. Is this a sudden interest in Swansea, or is it simply long overdue, and what could it mean for students and their families? Despite the current economic situation high gas prices, the lending crisis, and a looming recession Swansea may soon have a dramatically different retail landscape. This is especially surprising given the Chapter 11 bankruptcy claimed by Circuit City and Linens-N-Things. The largest of the changes is the proposed 32-acre development named Swansea Commons at the former Tilcon Capaldi site. If the plans go through, it will be the largest commercial development in Swansea in 30 years. Swansea Commons will feature a Lowes, Target, and an unnamed restaurant with seating for up to 175 patrons. According to a Herald News article, there have been rumors that the restaurant may be an International House of Pancakes, T.G.I Fridays, Pub 99, or Olive Garden. A number of rumors have also been circulating about the fate of the former Building #19 location at the Swansea Place plaza, including that it will become a Sams Club, Kohls, Lowes or Target. The latter two are now part of the Swansea Commons proposal, while Kohls has proposed a demolition of the former Apex store at the Swansea Mall to build a 98,000 square-foot store in its place, according to multiple Herald News articles. The owner of Swansea Place, R.K. Associates, has been in talks with two major retail chains, according to R.K. Associates primary David Katz, in a Herald News interview, but no definitive plans have been announced. The Swansea Mall is also on the cusp of major changes. Besides the possible Kohls mentioned above, Regis Salon was recently renovated, and The Shoe Department, relocated to accommodate Octobers Old Navy addition, should open shortly. A Wal-Mart Supercenter will also be built behind the Mall, replacing the smaller-than-average store currently attached to the Mall. The store will measure 131,000 square-feet, including a 50,000 square-foot grocery store, and will be open 24 hours a day. But why the sudden interest in Swansea? One reason is the recent changes of ownership of the two plazas in town. Both R.K. Associates and Gator Investments have been diligent in improving their centers at Swansea Place and Swansea Crossing Plaza, respectively. Meanwhile, at the Swansea Mall, General Growth Properties, the second largest mall owner in the country, has been managing the center since May 2004. Because of its size, General Growth is able to attract national retailers such as Old Navy and Kohls. In an e-mail statement, Swansea Mall general manager Jason Hauer says that General Growths management has relationships with all national retailers throughout the entire spectrum within the industry. According to the website of Mall owner Carlyle Development Group, a new revitalization program that includes renovation of the Main Entrances, Food Court and all Common Areas should begin shortly at the cost of $70 million. Another reason for this influx of development is the construction of a desalinization plant on the Palmer River. When completed, it will be able to meet the water needs for new developments without straining water availability for the rest of the town. One of the downfalls of these developments would be an obvious traffic increase. To address this problem, four additional traffic lights will be added one at each highway off-ramp at Exit 3, at the entrance to the new Swansea Commons, and at the Swansea Place. But there could be more in store for Swansea. The town owns a 50-acre parcel of land across from Swansea Place that could eventually become either a business park or another shopping plaza or lifestyle center if they decided to sell the land to the highest bidder. Lifestyle centers, the newest trend in retailing, combine big-box retailers, atypical mall retailers, offices, and other services in an outdoor, village-like setting that is more visually pleasing than malls often are. If these proposals are followed through, Swansea might be compared to congested retail clusters in Seekonk and Dartmouth, adding much needed tax revenue and jobs to the area. xsGMMd(xKddd8])PC . 8TXT3 A (continued to p. 5)dGMMd(xKddd7 \} BB3 !# $3 "3 # S" # &# $# $# %# (; C # (3 #; "# $# &3 $# ## '3 $; $3 #l (3 !# $C "+ !3 3 #+ # %3 %+ #3 %3 # $; C + 3 !; %3 "S # &3 %3 &# !# &3 #2 #+ '# '; &# #C + %3 "3 $; C !# %+ $# (# "# (3 %# C\ # '# $+ '# "; #3 + C? C Cases Theatre Company was soaring and flying through the halls of East High Wildcats School, with Disneys most popular fad, High School Musical, this Mothers Day weekend. High School Musical is a change in production for the actors; they were able to act their age and portray characters closer to those seen in everyday life around school, rather than find a completely different character within them. The stage production is also a little different than one would see in the movie. Disneys writers (Matthew Gerrard and Robbie Nevil, to name only the first two) added Jack Scott (senior Sean Toland), a lively multipersonality-based narrator who pops up out of nowhere during the show. Characters are broken up into three different groups; jocks, thespians and brainiacs. They stay in these groups until the end of the play, when the students break down the stereotypical wall in their school. This fairy tale type musical begins at a New Years Eve party, where Troy Bolton (junior A.J. Carvalho) and Gabriella Montez (senior Kasey Jeronimo) meet while singing karaoke together. They soon find out that Gabriella is a new student at Troys school, and the two are completely different with only one thing in common; they love singing together, which changes everything in their school. The two beat out sibling sensations Sharpay (freshman Taylor DeMoranville) and Ryan Evans (senior Andre Gadbois) for the roles of Juliet and Romeo in EHs musical. There are a lot of members who joined the Theatre Company for this show. Senior Cait Cestodio has been dancing every since she could stand, but has waited until now to join drama. You always hear the people involved in drama talk about production week. I wanted to be a part of that excitement at least once during high school, and what better time to do it than in my senior year? HSM is the last show the seniors took part in. Its been four long years, says Sara Hingorany, but I will never forget the memories I have made. Carvalho and Jeronimo agree that having the lead roles is very exciting. I was nervous about going on stage to act and sing, says Jeronimo. I had never done both. Now when Im on stage, I love it its a talent Ive learned to appreciate and share with everyone. Carvalho can sympathize with her nerves. Ive never had a lead. In Peter Pan, I had a minor speaking role, and in Arabian Nights, I only had a walk-on. Now I understand the energy and emotions that come over your body when everyone is focused just on you. 8 xsGMMd8 (xKddd8 ``%@ @ P ' by Erik Macedo Cardinal StaffxGMMdxGMMdxGMMdxGMMd(xKddd @ BUSINESS (cont. from p.3) nGMMdnGMMd(xKddd$ %u$@" %Case students soar through Musical$,GMMd$U(xKddd$ @@*P P ' by Tess Koolen Cardinal Staff xGMMd xGMMdxGMMdxGMMd(xKddd @B REVIEW (cont. from p.4)nGMMdnGMMd(xKddd R pThank You ,GMMd U(xKddd < %R|( %B %BM %BfU %Best Wishes and Good Luck to the Case High Class of 2008!<GMMd<U(xKddd<# @@8P [ P ' Parody by Alex Bacon Cardinal StaffxGMMd xGMMdxGMMd#(xKddd# dA page 6dGMMd(xKdddAbadi MT Condensed"Abadi MT Condensed Extra Bold"Abadi MT Condensed Light"AndyBBeesknees ITCRBickley ScriptBBraggadocioRCopperplate Gothic Bold"Copperplate Gothic Light"EddaREnviroREurostile"Fine HandBGoudy Old StyleKino MTRMatisse ITCROCRB1ParadeBPepita MTBPlacard Condensed"Runic MT Condensed NoneRegistrationPaperBlackRedGreenBlueCyanMagentaYellowp @R >pThe Cardinal StaffxGMMd(xKdddp@ @ A>Pp`p@ pJPp`p=Pp`pBPp`p>Pup`pP) p(P pPp@p@p@pSenior Reporters: Nick Bessette, Tim Boardman, Tess Koolen, Jordan Masters, Megan Rogers.
