Dear Parents,

In order to improve student care, we have a protocol for the use of Benadryl by our nurses in the event of an allergic reaction.  This allows for the initiation of treatment while parents, physicians, and an ambulance (if necessary) are contacted.

Benadryl, an over-the-counter oral antihistamine, can be safely given to most children and young adults except for those with a rare sensitivity to the medication.  The use of Benadryl will not take place of medical assessment and further treatment but rather be an adjunct to it.

Our goal is threefold: 1. To initiate treatment that might otherwise be delayed, 2. to lessen symptoms that are understandably frightening to students and  3. To possibly prevent progression to anaphylaxis (shock) in the most severe cases.

Please note:  ** If your child has a known allergy to benadryl we ask that you notify the                                                                                        school nurse in writing.

This new policy applies only to students who have an unexpected allergic reaction.  It does not apply to students with a history of allergic reactions to bees, food, etc., which requires having Benadryl and/or epinephrine on hand.  For these students parents will still be required to provide medication and written orders from their private physician regarding which procedure he/she wishes us to follow.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in these matters as we continue to provide health care to your children.

Sincerely,
