Home Language Survey - Swansea Public Schools

Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education regulations require that all schools determine the language(s) spoken in each student's home in order to identify their specific language needs. This information is essential in order for schools to provide meaningful instruction for all students.  If a language other than English is spoken in the home, the District is requried to do further assessment of your child.  Please help us meet this important requirement by answering the following questions.  Thank you for your assistance.

In accordance with the requirements of the Federal Government and the state of Massachusetts, the Swansea Public Schools offers an ELL (English language learner) program for those students whose first language is not English. The purpose of the program is to provide instruction that is designed to assist LEP (limited English proficient) students in learning both English and subject matter content. English language instruction is delivered by the ESL (English as a second language) teacher. The students are provided with sheltered content instruction by their classroom teachers.  The Swansea Public Schools is involved in an ongoing process of providing professional development to teachers on how to effectively teach English language learners in their content area classes. If you would like to learn more about our English Language Education program, please contact Jennifer Palmisciano, ELL Coordinator, at 508-675-7892.
