Food Assistance Resources

Food Insecurity is a serious issue in our community and many communities across the commonwealth. To assist in time of need we have put a few resources together which we hope, if needed, may be of use.

Kids Can Eat At School For Free In Massachusetts

Free school meals are available to ALL students— permanently! This means all Massachusetts students attending a school that participates in the National School Lunch Program can enjoy a tasty, nutritious lunch daily at no cost to their families. And free breakfast is provided to all students at schools participating in the School Breakfast Program. Swansea Public Schools is proud to offer free School Breakfast and School Lunch to our students.

Full Plate Project

Through YMCA Southcoast’s partnership with the Greater Boston Food Bank, the Full Plate Project started as an emergency response to pandemic-related nutrition insecurity in April 2020. It quickly grew into one of the largest hunger relief agencies in the Southcoast region.

Y community markets are open to all Southcoast residents in need of nutrition assistance. Participants will be asked to provide basic information including ZIP code and the number of people living in their household. No photo ID is required.

Each household receives prepackaged fresh, frozen, and pantry food items based on availability. Markets typically last an hour and a half, or less when food runs out, which happens often. There are no town residency, eligibility, or Y membership requirements.

All in need are welcome to take advantage of this free program on a first come, first served basis.

How Can I Help?

  • Swansea Town Hall serves as a drop location for food donations for the veterans Association of Bristol County. This is for veterans and their Widows. As federal benefits, freeze up, given the government shut down, please consider, if you can, cleaning out your own cabinets and donating non-perishables.

  • Swansea Animal Shelter accepts donations of all kinds to support families in need of pet food assistance. Please call the Animal Shelter at 508-679-6446 to make arrangements. Do not leave donations outside!

  • Many of the listed food banks are looking for volunteer help and have links on their websites.
